What is the difference between Thermal Printing and Screen Printing and what are the advantages of each?
SCREEN PRINTING is a process that paints a design directly onto the garment. The cost of making your first screen is $25 and $20 for each additional screen. The screens will be kept for a year and you will not be charged for repeat orders within one year. First a Screen is prepared with the image by removing the backing so that the paint can be applied to the garment through the screen. The paint is then dried and the image has been Screen Printed (painted) onto the garment. A new screen is needed for each color in the design and very careful setup is needed to keep each colors separated when the next color is applied.. The screens are cleaned of excess paint and either saved for reuse or the image is removed and the screen reclaimed for another image. The screens will be kept for a year and you will not be charged for repeat orders within one year. The Screen Printing process is very time consuming, for these reasons it is very costly to print runs of less than 24 Pieces. Because screen designs are printed with screen templates you can achieve greater detail in the final design. Screen Printing is durable on most cottons and cotton/poly blends, however the image may crack and peal on stretchable materials or with time.

THERMAL PRINTING is a process that heat applies a design that has been CAD (Computer Aid Design) Cut on a piece of Thermal Film. The material not need in the design is removed leaving the design on a carrier. The design is then applied to the garment with a heat press. This process is repeated for each color in the design. Applying the CAD cut design can not be done at home because the heat press maintains a constant pressure, temperature, and time throughout the application process. Thermal Printed design are more durable than Screen Printed designs but they are not as detailed, nor do they have as soft a feel. Thermal Printing Materials are available for most fabrics including nylon but they are best used on garments of polyester or cotton. Since each color of each design must be prepared separately for each garment, this process is most cost effective on smaller runs or where durability is needed.
